Richard has taught 2,986 online classes to 68 students in 28 countries...
My name is Richard. I am the creator of Linguaspectrum, the best place online to learn and practice English for free, and Linguaspectrum PLUS, the web's best online language school.
I am an experienced and qualified English Teacher and I have given thousands of online English classes to students around the world since 2006.
I have also been a professional writer, publishing my first article in 1984, and the passion of my working life has always been the English language. I can't imagine a better job than that of teaching English to students across the world. It is a privilege to meet and to teach so many wonderful people in so many countries. And all of this without ever once having to step outside my own home. The benefits of technology!
I am flexible and adaptable and always keep my student's needs uppermost in my thoughts. As far as I am concerned, my students are in charge of their own learning while I guide them along on the exciting journey that is the English language.
I love to teach and my students love to learn. It's a perfect combination!

Teaching
I teach both conversation and intensive classes. While conversation classes are just that, intensive classes involve working through a chosen course book. The book chosen depends on the results of the Introductory Class, but may be a general English course or an English for Special Purposes (ESP) book, such as business or aviation.
Intensive Classes - Book Based
Before an intensive class, a student does some reading and listening exercises from the chosen course books. A student can decide how much time to dedicate to this preparation, depending on their day-to-day commitments, though I will guide them by suggesting which exercises to look at. Most students spend at least an hour on this guided self-study, but it all depends on a student’s motivation and dedication to their studies.
During the online class, the student has the opportunity to use the language they have learnt during their guided self-study time in a natural, communicative fashion. The online class is also an opportunity to clear up any doubts they may have, and to improve their understanding. When we hear, we forget. When we read, we remember. But when we do, we understand. My method is to get the student to use the language in a productive and communicative way and thus come to understand how the language works. This way, the student becomes more confident and more fluent in their use of the language, be it spoken or written.
Writing Classes
Writing is a skill often overlooked. Teachers tend not to concentrate on writing because it can be time-consuming. But writing is an important skill that can be of great help to understanding the language. I teach writing by asking students to prepare a piece of written work. We then work through it together during an online class. This way the student comes to better understand their mistakes and how the language works. This method also works well for students who want help editing an important document. Theses, reports, presentations, letters, proposals and more can benefit from this approach, while the student also learns from their mistakes.
Class Length
I recommend that students take 30-60 minute online classes, as often as possible. Regularity and moderation of study helps students make the fastest progress. In online classes longer than 60 minutes, the additional time is of little benefit to the learning process and can be counter-productive. The amount of effort a student must make in an online class can be mentally exhausting. In the online classroom the student gets 100% of my attention, and has to work hard for 100% of the time, unlike in a classroom, where other students provide breathing space. In the online classroom, students have nowhere to hide, but they do make very fast progress.
Availability
I am available from 1000hrs to 2200hrs every day except Wednesdays, and alternating Saturdays and Sundays. Classes at the weekend can be more relaxing for the student as they are usually free of the pressures of work.
Benefits
A typical language academy provides 3 hours a week of classroom time in classes of one-and-a-half hours with 10-12 students. A typical year’s course consists of around 96 hours and ought to take a student to the next level. With online classes, you can complete the equivalent of a year's course in an academy in a few months.
In an academy, students open their course books and work through the exercises with the teacher. For the majority of the time they are passively reading or listening to the teacher or to other students. The amount of actual productive language use per student is woefully low. With my online classes, the student has done the passive work before reaching the classroom. They then have 100% of the time to put that language into productive communication.
Bear in mind that there are no travel expenses or time involved in online study, and its convenience cannot be matched by an academy, and you will see that there is no better way to learn a language than online.

Welcome to the twelth Linguaspectrum British English pronunciation video. As I mentioned in the last video, number eleven, we have a group of three vowel sounds, /æ/, /e/, and /ʌ/ which are very similar, very common, and very confusing. The last video looked at the confusion between the /æ/ and the /e/ sounds. In this video, we'll take a look at the /ʌ/ sound on our British English IPA chart.
If you stop for a moment, and look closely at the world around you, you can find some pretty amazing things. I thought I’d share with you some of the amazing things I found today.
All you need to know about iron, ironing and how to say them.
A museum gives us a peek into the past and makes us realise that, apart from the technology, we are essentially the same as those who came before us. This quiz explores the useful vocabulary of museums. You will learn the meaning of words such as: gallery, exhibit, exhibition, collection, artefact, antiquity, relic, label, plinth, mount, alcove, torso, statue, sculpture, bust, mosaic, column, capital, archaeological, archaeology, prehistoric, tantalising, skull, owl, adorn, rim, hoard, grisly, excavation, rivet, elaborate, wick, crude, fashioned, inset, plaited.
Welcome to the seventh Linguaspectrum British English pronunciation video. In this video, we'll take a look at the pure vowel sound /e/ on our British English IPA chart. So how is this /e/ vowel sound represented in written English? You will be pleased to discover that this is one of the vowels that is mainly spelt one way, with the letter e.
In this video we are looking at the /u:/ vowel sound. The /u:/ is called the close back rounded vowel and is found in words such as goose. /gu:s/ Notice that the /u:/ sound has two dots after it. As you know, this means that the vowel sound is a long vowel sound. Think of the /u:/ as the longer version of the /ʊ/.
Let's take a look at the first of the two close back vowel sounds on our British English IPA chart, shall we? The /ʊ/ is called the near-close near-back rounded vowel and is found in words such as foot /fʊt/.
The short vowel sound /ɪ/ might look like the letter I, but it is not pronounced like the name of the letter I, it is pronounced as /ɪ/. A short sound. Now, it may not sound like the names of any of the letters of the alphabet that represent vowels, but it does look like the letter I, and it is the letter I that we most commonly use to spell the sound /ɪ/. You can most clearly hear the short vowel sound, /ɪ/, in short monosyllabic words that have only the one vowel sound, /ɪ/, in them, like big, dim, fib, hit, lip, pig, rib, sin, tip, wit, zip.
The first pure vowel sound on our chart is a long vowel sound. We know it is a long vowel because it has two dots (:) after it. The first pure vowel sound is the sound we make when we say the letter e. E is one of the five letters in the English alphabet that represent vowels. These letters are... a, e, i, o, u This long vowel sound is heard in words such as tree /tri:/, me /mi:/ and pea /pi:/. Notice that the sound /i:/ can be spelt in many ways.

Learn the months of the year and the seasons to which the months belong. There are four seasons in an English year. In English these are spring, also known as springtime. summer, which is also called summertime... autumn, or fall in the English of the USA, because it is the time when leaves fall... and winter or wintertime.

A term that has become increasingly popular in English since the 1970s has been political correctness or PC. In simple terms, this means avoiding the use of words or phrases that might upset someone's sensibilities. In more complex terms, this means being afraid to say what you think because it just might be deemed offensive by the PC Brigade. It is a curtailing of our freedom of speech.
Here is a subject you won't find in any detail in any of your English textbooks. It's strange really, when you consider that each and every one of us does this at least once or twice a day.

¡Animo, English is a piece of cake!

In fact, the Internet is flooded with gigabytes of different free English lessons with various accents and methods. But it appears quite difficult to find a proper course which matches your needs. And it's even much harder to find a teacher who has necessary skills and experience.
When I had found this site I thought: “Wow! A lot of British accent! And for free!” To be honest, I could spend my time by using all those free lessons. But it was very interesting to meet the teacher who made those lessons.
I've already completed a number of Conversation and Intensive classes. And every lesson is like a little journey to another huge culture. And teacher's rich experience and excelent sense of humour help me to be more confident every time.
Thank you, Richard, very much,
Dmitry
